August 2005 Misc. Images

August is not the clearest month of the year, but despite cloudiness and haze, I have been taking many astrophotographs.  Here are a few random images that I've done this month.

The Moon on August 16, 2005.  Several raw images taken with a 500mm F/5.6 lens and my Canon Digital Rebel were combined to give this image.

The Planet Mars.   This image was taken on  8/21/05 with my C-8 telescope and a Toucam Pro webcam.  Sixty-three frames from an AVI video were combined in Registax to form this image.  It was not the best of nights to be doing planetary astrophotography, the seeing was terrible! But, at least I got a useable image.  :-)

Before taking the picture of Mars above, I used the Moon to check the focus of my telescope.  I shot 20 frames and here are 18 of the best ones stacked into a single image.

The Heart of the Scorpion and the M4 Globular Cluster.  Antares, located in Scorpio, is a red-yellow supergiant star visible on the left side of the frame and M4 is the globular star cluster on the right.  In between and slightly above both is the faint globular star cluster, M80.  This image is a single 140 second exposure with a 500mm F/5.6 telephoto and a Canon Digital Rebel at 800 ISO.

Detail view of M4 Globular Cluster from the above picture.  Note the band of stars running from north to south that bisects the core of the cluster.

On 8/26/05, I used the Moon again to check the focus of my telescope before imaging Mars.  I was using a Toucam Pro webcam, my C-8 telescope, a diagonal and an old Celestron 2X Barlow.  This image is 96 frames stacked in Registax 3.0.   Click the image to enlarge it.

The Trifid Nebula, M20.  I imaged this object on 8/27/05 with a 500mm F/5.6 lens and a Canon Digital Rebel at 800 ISO.  I took eleven 120 second sub-images and combined them in IRIS with dark, offset and flat corrective images .  I then used Photoshop Elements to color balance, crop and save in JPEG format.   Click the image to enlarge it.

The Pleiades, M45.  I imaged this object on 8/27/05 with a 500mm F/5.6 lens and a Canon Digital Rebel at 800 ISO.  This was just an experiment to see if I could image a deep sky object with the last quarter Moon nearby.  I took three 120 second exposures and combined them in IRIS.  Its not too bad, even with moonlight interference.
